I've been neglecting this little blog for the past couple of weeks. I followed some friends into the land of photography and decided to join them in taking and posting one photo a day for a year. I am 25 days into my own Project 365. (I didn't take a photo on New Year's Day so for me, it's really Project 364 but who's counting?)
I've always been a bit of a shutter bug, but I've never had a nice enough camera. I've had two digital cameras since digital cameras came onto the scene. It wasn't until I traded my first digital camera for a Canon PowerShot SD1200 IS a few years ago that I realized I had a camera that finally did justice to my photos. Not bad for a camera that's under $200.
I have a decent eye for composing a photo -- but I don't know PhotoShop (been meaning to learn!) and I have no technical training in photography (darkroom? what's that?). However, now that there are dozens of photo editing sites available, I don't really need PhotoShop to edit my photos. I can remain forever an imposter. I think that's fine because I don't claim to be a professional photographer and have no plans to start my own photography business, especially with a point and shoot camera! I just want to be able to print out a beautiful book of my 365 photos at the end of the year. And it's fun to see what my friends are up to with their 365 projects. However, there will be NO photos of me. Yuck!
It takes me a mere 5 minutes to edit and upload a photo to both Flickr and my Facebook page. That's it.
Compare that to a blog post that takes me anywhere from 20 minutes to 2 hours to compose, depending upon the type of post I'm writing. I get far more comments on a photo than I do when I post a link to one of my blog posts or when I post random status updates - go figure.
So after dabbling briefly in both worlds, I have a greater respect for photographers like Linda DLR of Solheim Photography and Tina Case/Kristina Rust of Moms Who Click because they can do both: tap out beautiful words and click out beautiful photos. It's not easy to be able to do both!
I'm resigned to finishing out the year with my tiny camera, but you can be sure I have a DSLR on my wish list!
I don't post my photos where all the biggies go - no way! - it would be laughable that I use a point and shoot. There should be a 365 Flickr group for us amateurs. Anyway, check out my Project 365 photos here: www.flickr.com/svtwinmom.
