One of my favorite children's books is the Bake Shop Ghost, in which pastry chef after pastry chef tries to please the cantankerous ghost of Cora Lee Merriweather, who"ran the best bake shop in these parts."
Late Friday night, I made a peanut butter cream pie in honor of Mikey, Jennifer Perillo's beloved husband who passed away unexpectedly last week.
I can't imagine such a loss...
But in her grief, the poised and beautiful Jennifer (whom I met once) asked nothing more from her network of friends than to bake a peanut butter cream pie, her husband's favorite.
"For those asking what they can do to help my healing process, make a peanut butter pie this Friday and share it with someone you love. Then hug them like there's no tomorrow because today is the only guarantee we can count on."
I had trouble in spreading the chocolate part (Ana Picazo - what's up with that?) and the result was not a visual delight (my fault) but today, I served it up with love to the people I love... my two sons and my husband.
A pie served with love is a pie worthy of the very best bake shops.
If only there were a bake shop where we could share a favorite dessert with the ghosts of the people we once loved. Jennie's Bake Shop lives on, in creamy peanut butter pies being served up to loved ones across the country. What a gift she has given to us all.
